Guide: Vertical Paper Feeding with Horizontal Layout in iAuto

When using the iAuto Automatic Handwriting Machine, achieving smooth paper feeding is essential for high-quality, uninterrupted writing. While most projects can be completed using standard horizontal feeding, certain paper sizes or materials may cause issues such as paper skewing, jamming, or distorted writing when fed horizontally.

This is especially common with smaller formats such as #10 envelopes or A6 paper sheets, where the short edge can be difficult for the rollers to grip securely. In such cases, the solution is to feed the paper vertically while keeping the writing horizontally aligned on the page. This guide will walk you through the correct method for setting up vertical paper feeding with horizontal text layout.

Step 1: Create the Correct Paper Size

First, define your paper size in the iAuto software. When preparing for vertical feeding, remember this principle:

  • The shorter side should be set as the width.
  • The longer side should be set as the height.

For example, if you are using A6 paper (105 mm × 148 mm):

  • Width = 105 mm
  • Height = 148 mm

By setting the dimensions this way, you ensure that the software matches the actual orientation of the paper once it is placed in the vertical feeder.

Step 2: Adjust the Coordinate System and Layout

Once the paper size is created, the software automatically adjusts the coordinate system. In vertical feeding mode, the system rotates 90° counterclockwise:

  • For standard iAuto models, the coordinate system origin moves to the bottom left corner.
  • For iAuto Premium series models, the origin is positioned along the left-center edge of the page.

This rotation means that when you add text, images, or handwriting content, you must think in terms of a rotated layout. Effectively, you are designing your content sideways so that when the paper is fed vertically, the text will appear correctly aligned horizontally.

Tips for layout adjustment:

  • Rotate your design area accordingly so the text runs parallel to the long side of the page.
  • Use guidelines in the software to check margins and spacing, ensuring no content is cut off once the paper is fed.
  • Test with a light draft run on plain paper before using premium stationery or envelopes.

Step 3: Load the Paper Vertically into the Feeder

With your design prepared, it’s time to load the paper. Place the sheets vertically into the iAuto feeding tray. Make sure the following conditions are met:

  1. Paper alignment – The stack should be neatly aligned without curled edges.
  2. Feeding guides – Adjust the side guides so the paper is snug but not too tight, preventing wobbling during the feed.
  3. Paper quality – For thick or textured paper, check the feeding pressure to ensure smooth transport.

Once the paper is properly loaded, start the writing task. The iAuto will feed the paper vertically, but because you rotated the layout in Step 2, the text will appear correctly in its natural horizontal orientation.

Benefits of Vertical Feeding with Horizontal Layout

  • Prevents paper skewing – Vertical feeding reduces the risk of small sheets being pulled unevenly.
  • Reduces paper jams – The rollers grip longer edges more securely, ensuring smoother feeding.
  • Improves output accuracy – Writing remains straight and consistent, especially on envelopes or small cards.
  • Expands usability – Enables professional writing on various materials, including invitations, greeting cards, and promotional inserts.

Final Notes

Switching from horizontal to vertical feeding may feel counterintuitive at first, but it is a practical solution for certain paper sizes. By following the steps above—defining the correct paper size, adjusting the coordinate system, and feeding the paper vertically—you can eliminate common issues like misalignment and jamming.

This method is particularly recommended for:

  • #10 envelopes
  • A6 cards and sheets
  • Custom-sized small papers

With proper setup, your iAuto handwriting machine will deliver smooth, professional, and accurate writing results, even on challenging paper formats.
